Akeem Cunningham is a dedicated public servant, community leader, and passionate advocate for equity and opportunity in Essex County, New Jersey. Currently serving as Deputy Chief of Staff to East Orange Mayor Ted R. Green, Cunningham plays a pivotal role in advancing policy, leading civic engagement initiatives, and supporting youth development efforts throughout the city and county.
A lifelong East Orange resident, Cunningham’s path in public service is rooted in deep community ties and a steadfast commitment to impact. Cunningham was a key contributer to bringing home campus high school first state championship in 2008. Was ranked a top 100 football player in the state of New Jersey. In 2018, he was honored as Firefighter of the Year by the Family Assistance Resource Center, a recognition of his exceptional service, leadership, and bravery as a first responder.
Cunningham is the founder Work Now, a community-centered workforce development initiative that has helped over 300 Essex County residents secure employment. His focus on economic empowerment and youth opportunity extends to hosting NFL players for sports camps and speaking engagements, providing local youth with mentorship, guidance, and positive role models.
In the political arena, Cunningham has played a key behind-the-scenes role in campaigns across Essex County. His grassroots organizing, strategic insight, and commitment to community-first leadership made him a trusted contributor to the success of numerous local and county-wide elections.
In December 2024, he was appointed President of the Urban League of Essex County Young Professionals (ULECYP), where he continues to champion access, economic development, equity, and professional development for emerging leaders.
In recognition of his impact, leadership, and dedication to public service, Akeem Cunningham was named one of New Jersey’s Top 100 Millennials, highlighting his growing influence across civic, nonprofit, and political spaces.
